Translation: the groundwork

Editing: a critical part of the process
Editing is not performed by the translator. Instead, this task is performed by another person with the appropriate competence in the source and target languages. The editor examines the translation’s suitability for the purpose, including a sentence-by-sentence comparison of the source and target texts to check for terminology consistency, register and style.
It is all about ensuring that the text is clear, coherent and uniform. Editing also focuses on style so that the text comes across as the writer intended.
The editor also ensures that the content no longer reads like a translation, but rather reads as though it were originally written in the target language. Editing is the real added value that takes the translation up a notch.
Once the editor is satisfied that the translation cannot be further improved, the document is passed on to a proofreader.
Proofreading: the polishing process
Proofreading is the final step of the editing process. It focuses on surface errors such as formatting, misspellings and punctuation with a special eye to titling and slogans. The purpose of proofreading is to ensure that the text is entirely fluent, error-free and audience-ready.
This function is performed by a third person — a native speaker of the target language who is also well versed in the terminology, style and brand guide, the keys that have now given “voice” to the client’s brand in the target language.
